Liberty, Equality, Fraternity

Drawing by John Leech, ca. 1860
MHM Collections

This anti-American illustration by British artist John Leech depicts a conflicted Liberty, the personification of the United States, poised to whip a slave as an overseer watches. The satirical sketch serves as a not-so-subtle moral critique of the United States, a nation founded on the principles of freedom and liberty that enslaved more than 12.5 percent of its population in 1860. Great Britain had abolished slavery in 1833.
