Slate Board and Pencil from Captain John Kayser's Civil War Field Desk

1861-1865
MHM Collections

Serving in dual positions as quartermaster and commissary of subsistence, much of Kayser’s time at camp would have been devoted to paperwork. Creating and maintaining accurate records was a crucial part of acquiring and distributing the military supplies and food for which Kayser was responsible. He was able to transfer his experience from the war to civilian life when he returned to St. Louis and became a grocer.
