Agreement for Hiring Out Henry Lucas

1859
MHM Archives

Even those who did not own slaves benefited from the slave system of labor, as slaves were often hired out for use by others in the community. This document confirms the hiring out of “the colored man, Henry Lucas” by Philip Curtis, a drayman, from E. B. Kimball, a commission merchant in St. Louis. The agreement specifies a term of service for one year, and includes provisions for Lucas’s care.
