Major John McDonald’s Proclamation Warning Southern Sympathizers in Ste. Genevieve

Union military officials had to contend with a populace that was often hostile to Federal soldiers. As Major McDonald asserts in this broadside, those who turned a blind eye to the mistreatment of Federal troops would be held culpable. Citizens were expected to come to the defense of those threatened by rebels, or McDonald would hold them personally responsible.
