Recruiting Handbill for the 33rd Missouri Infantry (Union)

1862
MHM Archives

Recruitment notices often used patriotic graphics and language to appeal to the public’s sense of duty and allegiance. In this colorful one, Missourians are urged to drop whatever they are doing in order to participate in “crushing the wicked rebellion” and restore the Union. Not relying solely on a potential recruit’s sense of obligation to his country as enough incentive, this notice also announces that a handsome bounty and advance pay will be given.
