Declaration of Emancipation for Alice M. Walker

Missouri, although technically still a slave state, and the Mississippi River Valley were inundated with freed slaves. Alice Walker traveled with her family from Mississippi to St. Louis, where the Office of the Superintendent of Contrabands formalized their freedom. Relief societies endeavored to find work and homes for the recently freed slaves to move them from the camps.
