Bombardment of Island “Number Ten” in the Mississippi River

1862
MHM Photographs and Prints

Confederate batteries set up fortifications at Island No. 10, near New Madrid, Missouri, early in the war in order to secure the lower Mississippi River. But with a battering by Federal gunboats, Union forces defeated the Confederates on the island and claimed 5,000 prisoners. The Union fleet had started to open the Mississippi to further campaigns downriver.
