Unidentified African American Soldier at Benton Barracks

1864
Library of Congress

Black soldiers stationed at Benton Barracks helped construct the fair buildings and performed guard duty during the fair’s run. For their work they were paid 50 cents a day and given admission to the fair. The soldiers donated the pay they received to the Freedmen’s Department of the fair, which accepted funds to aid free African Americans.
