Major General Franz Sigel

1861
MHM Photographs and Prints

A German revolutionary forced to flee Europe after 1848, Franz Sigel made himself at home in the St. Louis German community. He was a popular figure in the city, which allowed him to successfully recruit for the Union army. He was skilled as an artillery strategist, but he had a tendency to make costly blunders in battle.
