The Interior of a Hospital Car

From Harper's Weekly, 1864
MHM Library

The number of wounded soldiers from the Battle of Wilson’s Creek overwhelmed the facilities, doctors, and transportation available. The injured were moved from the battlefield to nearby farms, to the few medical tents in the army camps, and to Springfield, Missouri. Many of the surviving wounded were then transported to hospitals in St. Louis by train, marking the first time railroad cars were used to transport battle casualties.
