MHM Photographs and Prints

The Cairo, one of Eads’ boats built at the shipyard in Mound City, Illinois, became the first ship in history to be sunk by an electrically detonated device. It struck a Confederate naval mine in the Yazoo River north of Vicksburg, Mississippi, in December 1862. No lives were lost during the sinking.
