Black soldiers returning home shared the relief and joy of their white counterparts. Conflict on the battlefield was over, but they faced a long fight ahead in their bid for equality. Military service provided a glimpse of the power black men could hold, and many soldiers returned to their communities determined to fight against racial inequality.
