Mrs. Sterling Price and Other Shipwreck Survivors

1866
MHM Photographs and Prints

After General Sterling Price fled to Mexico, his family planned to join him there, but their ship sank en route and they had to be rescued off the coast of Virginia. In this photo, Price’s wife, Martha, is seated in the center with their daughter, Stella, standing to her right and their son, Celsus, behind her to the left. The family finally united in the Confederate colony of Carlota but returned to St. Louis in 1867.
