Certificate of Contribution for the Soldiers’ Orphans’ Home, St. Louis

MHM Archives

The Western Sanitary Commission opened the Soldiers’ Orphans’ Home in 1862 for white children left orphaned by the war. At its busiest, the home housed 100 orphans, but over time the numbers diminished until only half a dozen children remained. Near the end of the war, the WSC opened a separate facility, the Freedmen’s Orphan Home, for black children.
