General John C. Frémont

1867
MHM Collections

Frémont’s tenure as commander of the Department of the West was beset with controversy and consequentially brief. He spent most of his time by making the defense of St. Louis a priority. Frémont initiated the building of a line of ten heavily fortified earthwork forts around the city and oversaw the construction of Benton Barracks, a Federal military facility just north of St. Louis City that held 30,000 Union troops from select regiments in nine states.
