Senator James Henry Lane

Library of Congress

Lane, a former member of the Indiana legislature, moved west to Kansas in 1855. A charismatic but controversial leader, he became one of the most powerful political and military figures of the Free Soil movement. Lane organized large numbers of free-state militia to defend Kansas and raid into Missouri.
