Hospital & Yard for Condemned Gov't Horses & Mules at St. Louis, Mo

MHM Collections

The Federal government’s horse and mule depot in north St. Louis provided the Union army with a place to receive new horses and mules, or allow for the recuperation, sale, or disposal of sick and injured ones. Despite the emaciated appearance of some of the animals in this sketch, the artist, Alexander Simplot, attested to the condition and efficiency of the yard: “Everything around the place seems to be systematized and great attention is paid to cleanliness about the grounds.”
