General John S. Bowen

To safeguard against further threats, a portion of the Southwest Expedition remained behind on the western border of Missouri as a show of force. Organized as the Southwest Battalion, it was commanded by John S. Bowen, a West Point graduate who believed in the benefits of constant drilling and discipline. Bowen later became a respected commander in the Confederate army.
