This broadside announces a German meeting at the St. Louis courthouse on October 25, 1864. The two main speakers identified in the broadside, the Honorable Friedrich Hassaurek and Carl Schurz, were influential within the German communities. The event was likely a rally to show support for Republican candidates who supported abolition and opposed a movement to end the war, then in its third year. The German communities were an important voting demographic and many of them did not back Lincoln, whom they felt was too conservative. Schurz was one such Radical Republican, but he had been a strong Lincoln supporter in the 1860 election and remained loyal to him in 1864.
